Our Baby Nursery

So I have been working on getting together items for the baby's room.  My plan was to get items that could grow with the baby as he gets older.  I hate the idea of buying something that I will only use for a year or two.  So I found furniture that was versatile.  With regard to the bedroom linens, I chose to register for crib sheets and changing pad covers that were more babyish since I would only use them for the first two years anyway.  I chose curtains and lamps that were more adult so they could be used for years to come.  Here it goes.

Baby Dresser (and perfect size for a baby changer) - Amazon:

Changing Pad Cover (Land of Nod):

I love this idea, the peg board, for over the changing table (This picture is from Better Homes and Gardens):

Catchall Corner

Delta Four-in-One crib (toddler, day, and full) (Amazon):

Crib Sheet (Land of Nod):

Crib Skirt (the green stripe side) (Land of Nod):

Mobile for Over the Crib (Amazon):

Blanket for over the side of the crib (Target):

Circo® Geo Boy Knit Baby Blanket

Curtains (Land of Nod):

Lamp (Land of Nod):

Banner (the picture is from Land of Nod, but I thought I would try to make this):

Banner_Flag_Achievement_Group_v1

We have a futon now in the baby's room that we plan to keep, so I thought throwing a couple of these pillows on the futon would bring it in step with the rest of the room:

Childrens Pillow Cover Nursery Pillow Green Pillow Elephant Pillow 16x16 Cushion Cover

Green Pillow Covers Throw Pillows Lime Decorative 20x20 Set of 2 Cotton Home Decor

Can't wait to get everything and put it all together!

Seven Heavenly Meals

Here is a week of meals that will make you think you are eating somewhere really special every night.  Well face it, you are, your home.

Fennel-and-Sweet-Onion Pizza

If you think fennel does not belong on a pizza, then you would be wrong.  This roasted fennel is an unexpected delight.  The crust is also wonderful.  It is maybe the best homemade thin crust pizza recipe ever, so crispy and yummy.

Fried Shrimp Flatbreads with Spicy Cardamom Sauce

If you like a good sandwich, this one may just top your list.  So much flavor!  Use this flatbread recipe.

Smashed Shumai with Hot and Sour Broth

This is a nice unusual soup, serve as a first course or as a quick dinner.  Just as good the second day for lunch!

Thai Chicken with Hot-Sour-Salty-Sweet Sauce

Great grilled chicken. Serve with grilled sweet corn.  Baste the corn while grilling in a mixture of 2 tablespoons brown sugar, can of coconut milk, and two bay leaves.

Crispy Corn Tortillas with Chicken and Cheddar

This is a very easy recipe, I serve it with the radish relish and with an avocado sauce (one avocado blended with 1/2 cup salsa verde)

Grilled Pork Banh Mi

This would be a really good thing to grill for the Fourth of July.

Goat Cheese Ravioli With Orange And Fennel

This is a great recipe to make right after the pizza and Shumai recipe because then you have the fennel fronds and the wanton wrappers.

Ink....

So it has been some time since I posted.  Things have been super busy this spring :)  Anyway, M and I just got back from a wonderful vacation with my side of the family in Colorado.  It was much, much needed.

Before we left for vacation, me and some friends went and checked out Ink .  Ink is Top Chef Winner, Michael Voltaggio's hit restaurant in West Los Angeles.  We basically tried everything on the menu (except for the tasting menu), and I liked everything.  If I could describe this menu in one phrase, it would be "balanced modern comfort food."  This chef really has a knack for balancing different flavors - sweet, savory, sour, bitter etc.

These were my favorites:

beau soleil oysters, oyster leaf, mignonette ice.
- These are probably the best raw oysters I have EVER had, and the leaf that is served with them, strangely enough tastes just like an oyster. Yummy!

brussels sprouts, pigs ears, lardo, apple
 - Brussels sprouts charred are probably my favorite of all vegetables - no kidding.  But these brussels sprouts are really something special... I mean lardo... enough said.

baja scallops, egg yolk gnocchi, mushroom hay
 - The egg yolk gnocchi... so amazing.  It has basically the same texture as the scallops, but then  you press the gnocchi against your pallet with your tongue and the egg yolk bursts in your mouth. Delightful, comforting, and filling.

wagyu beef, carrots, tendon, horseradish tofu
- This dish is somewhat reminiscent of a beef stew my grandmother used to make almost every Saturday for me, my sister, and brother, except, this dish is a bit more sophisticated.   This dish pairs succulent beef, a tendon that basically looks like Styrofoam that melts in your mouth, roasted carrots, with a horseradish sauce that is out of this world.  I could literally eat this meal every Saturday for the rest of my life.

greek yogurt, strawberry, japanese peach, coconut
- Light, refreshing, and playful.  I love desserts that have some texture and depth of flavor.  All to often dessert is just sweet.  In my book dessert should be sweet, salty, tangy, creamy.  This dish delivers all of this.  The first layer is a banana/coconut cream with pieces of graham cracker crust.  Next layer is a greek frozen yogurt, followed by peaches and whole strawberries, as well as strawberry and I think rhubarb crushed ice.

So the next time you are longing for a good meal, check out Ink.

Star Sighting: Phil and Cam

So last night at the Edison, we spotted Phil (Ty Burrell) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) from Modern Family.  M being the great husband that he is got Eric to take a pic with me.  Unfortunately, M's iPhone doesn't have a flash - so the pic looks like it was taken from Mars, but anyway you can make out me and Eric.  Its a very sad picture, but a memory nonetheless:

Have a wonderful Sunday!

thanksgiving recap . . .

This year I made Thanksgiving dinner for M and his aunt and uncle.  It was a great crowd to make dinner for.  Here are some pictures from the day.

The Table Spread:

Place setting: rosemary, thyme, and sage - I especially liked these name cards because they looked and smelled pretty, and because after the dinner was over I just tipped them upside down and let them dry out.  Now I have dried herbs that will last up to six months.

Turkey - This year I used the Zankou garlic paste on my turkey.  For those of you that live in LA you know what I am talking about when I say the paste they give you for you rotisserie chicken that kind of resembles vegetable shortening.  That is what I spread all over my turkey, and the skin turned out nice and crispy.  Unfortunately, I over cooked the turkey a little bit due to the fact that my thermometer was clearly NOT working...  She did look beautiful though and had great skin :)

Brussel sprouts with pomegranate, orange and lime zests, and toasted hazelnuts - I got this recipe from Bobby Flay.  This was my favorite dish of the day, and my favorite to prepare.  I don't know about you but I love picking the seeds out of pommegrantes, for me its similar to snapping bubble wrap. Anyway, this dish was all about texture, it had a pop and a crunch to it that was delightful.

Roasted Veggies - I put cauliflower, red onions, and carrots underneath my turkey as it roasted and they were very good.

We also had my granmother's noodles, which I have featured on this blog before.  We also had mashed potatoes, stuffing, and homemade greenbean casserole.

And of course we had pumpkin pie with whipped cream:

After dinner we streamed the British series Sherlock Holmes from Netflix, which is a modern take on the classic.  Believe me by 4:00 p.m. I was ready to kick back and relax.  SH is a particuraly brilliant (much more intersting than the Hollywood version), and I highly recommend.  The first season has 3 episodes, but they are about 80 minutes in length.  Season 2 is due to air in early 2012, and I hope it will be available on iTunes or Netflix.

Later in the evening, since many of the stores opened at midnight in Burbank, M and I went out at 11:45 p.m. to see what all of the fuss was about.  We headed to Best Buy, and I couldn't believe all of the people that were out, I would say there were over a thousand people waiting in line at Target and Best Buy alone.  The Cheesecake Factory even had a truck at Best Buy and they were selling food and beverages to those poor souls waiting in line.

Then M and I headed over to Macys, you should have seen the women in the shoe department...need I say more... hilarious.  We did not buy anything, and we were both in bed by 1:30 a.m.

All in all... it was a lovely Thanksgiving Day, and I am very thankful that M and I spent another Thanksgiving together and with those that we love :)

i ate alligator

This weekend I went with my husband, and our friends D and M to Son of Gun, which I have been dying to try ever since I read about it in "Food and Wine" magazine in June.  The food critic said it was his favorite new restaurant in LA.

We tried to make reservations the Friday before, but the restaurant seats 55 and only takes reservations for half of the tables in the place. Walk-ins are allowed to sit at a communal table which seats 22, and these seats are available on a first come first serve basis.  So we opted to dine later, hoping to avoid the crowds, and for the communal dining experience.

I really liked sitting on the communal table, which was made out of a very rustic looking wood and had 22 wooden stools around it. Eating that way also strikes a lovely balance between eating at your parent's kitchen counter and eating at a restaurant.  You immediately feel relaxed.  I also think it makes for a great atmosphere.  We got to see what everyone around us ordered, and strike up conversations about whether they liked what they ordered, what other restaurants they loved in LA etc.  Also, the wait for the table was only about 30 minutes.

Like the dinner table, the menu is very communal.  It consisted of all small dishes that are meant to be shared with your dining companions (which is really my favorite thing in the world - sharing food).

The restaurant was pretty darkly lit so I didn't take any pictures, but here is what we tried (* liked, but would try something new over having it again, ** would order again, *** want to come back so I can have it again).

Cocktails:
Our table had the pimm's cup, * dark & stormy,* and sazerac

For Dinner:

The Lobster Roll -small piece of toasted bread, lobster, lemon aioli, fennel, garnished with potato chips. ***
Smoked Mahi and Crackers - it was very much like a crab dip, and then topped with fennel. *

Green Goddess Salad - heirloom grape tomatoes, purple green beans, avocado, fennel, rosemary, cucumber, and carrots - this is a playful salad. *

Mussels, Tarragon, Fennel and Toast - I think this was my favorite, I am not sure what was all in it obviously fennel, butter, cream, probably shallot and garlic.  But there were some other notes I couldn't quite put my finger on. ***

Linguine and Clams - this had like a mac and cheese taste to it with a jalapeno bite at the end. *

King Crab Legs w/ Tabasco Butter Sauce **

Alligator Schnitzel with Hearts of Palm and Orange - this was kind of a confusing dish.  The alligator was fried (almost like a very thin chicken patty) and then topped with a coleslaw of sorts with hearts of palm and some type of vanilla sauce.  The sauce reminded me of butterscotch - in the end - I decided that I am not really sure I want something with meat in it to taste like butterscotch?

For Dessert:
Frozen Lime Yogurt, graham cracker crumble, and toasted meringue ***
Apple Pie with ice cream

Internet Grocery Shopping

Forget having someone carry your groceries to your car - how about your home.

Although I actually love grocery shopping, things have been a tad bit busy around here - so I decided to try out Internet grocery shopping. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the following:
  • My grocer (Vons) will actually deliver the groceries to my door,
  • I can give special instructions to my personal shopper regarding picking out grocery items, i.e. "I like my bananas green";
  • The groceries are all the same price as in the grocery store,
  • The first delivery is free,
  • I can change my order up until 3:00 a.m. the day of the delivery,
  • My  grocery list is sent to my e-mail address after the order is processed, and
  • The website for Von's calculates how much each grocery item costs per ounce so there is not guessing re whether I am getting the best deal.
I'll let you know how it turns out.  Hopefully everything will be fresh when it comes Thursday evening between 7 and 9 p.m.

- As it turns out, the experience was great.

The business trip - business and pleasure please . . .

I love to travel and I love to learn . . . so when the chance came to head out of California to Minneapolis for a couple days for an e-discovery conference, I literally jumped at the chance.  The conference was very interesting and informative, but I doubt many of you are interested in the nuances of e-discovery so I won't waste time talking about what I learned.

Other than knowledge I gained from the classes, the thing I appreciated most about the trip, was the chance to meet other lawyers from across the country and discuss food, wine, drinks, theater, and travel.  This trip was also a good reminder that diversity in America is not just based on race or a persons economic status, but a lot of diversity comes from just living in a different state.  I really appreciate that.

On Thursday night, we had a "networking" dinner which was held at a relatively "new" spot in town, a restaurant called The Bank, located in the Westin Hotel in downtown Minneapolis.  A lovely little restaurant in - you guessed it - the former lobby of a bank that was built in the 1840s.  The lobby of "the bank," which was also the lobby of the hotel was renovated but still vibrated the class of the 1960s: the architect kept the large ceilings, the bank floors, the wood paneling to the ceiling, the huge bank clock, and old fashioned light fixtures. The old teller station at the center of the renovated lobby there was a bar with cocktail tables surrounding it.  Instead of a wine cellar, the wine was stored in the wine vault. The offices of this huge former bank were renovated into beautiful hotel rooms  (which is where I stayed).  It was just enough old and new to be luxurious.

It is so nice to meet up with different people form different regions, such good conversation ensues. Many of the participants in the conference were from the Midwest (Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin), but a lot of them were from out East  (Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, Richmond, and Washington D.C.)  As much as I love Angelenos (and I really do), it is true what they say - birds of a feather flock together.  And no matter how diversified California is (which I love), you can't get away from the fact that you start to become like the people you are around after awhile - no matter your race, sex or creed.  I mean we even start to talk like each other (which is very obvious in Minnesota).  During dinner, it was so refreshing to get a different perspective on travel, fine food, the challenges of raising a family and being a competitive lawyer, new shows on Broadway, news sources and outlets, and California wine favorites.

I usually really suck at networking, I just don't think I am cut out for it.  But for some reason at the "networking" dinner, I felt I was right on cue - it could have been the two cocktails, but honestly I think it was because everyone was interested in the same things I was - food, drinks, and art.  At one point, a woman from Washington D.C., said . . . "you are really way too nice to be from Los Angeles."

So I guess you probably wondering, what did we have to eat and drink?

Cocktail Hour:

Drink:  "the dark and stormy"- which had ginger beer, lime juice and rum (very yummy). The taste of this drink was subtle at first but even after it went down - I still could taste different flavors, first the rum, then the lime, then the ginger.  It was really something.

Appetizers - included rock shrimp served with candied bacon and topped with a lemon and basil cream sauce; crusty bread with steak, arugula, and blue cheese; crusty bread with a pear compote; and, of course, hamburger sliders.

Dinner:

Salad - Mixed greens with fennel and olive tapenade, served with blue cheese made from goat's milk and a vinaigrette.

Main Course - Salmon with a hashbrown crust nested in asparagus and drizzled with a truffle butter cream sauce.

Dessert - New York Cheesecake with lime zest and a key lime cream sauce and a flowerless chocolate tort with espresso ice cream.

So the next time you are in Minneapolis, check out The Bank.

This sorbet has an amazing mango flavor - I can't get enough!
